Depuis le 11 mai dernier et jusqu’au 1ier mars 2020, on peut admirer à l’excellent musée zurichois NONAM (Nordamerika Native Museum) une exposition consacrée au mystérieux Edward S. Curtis connu pour ses photographies des peuples premiers nord-américains prises entre 1907 et 1930. Les différents artefacts et documents rassemblés mettent aussi en lumière la collaboration de Curtis avec de nombreux hommes et femmes de l’ombre qui l’ont aidé à parachever sa monumentale œuvre The North American Indian. « Native Americans used to call him the «Shadow Catcher». He captured their images, and, some suspected, their spirits as well. Edward S. Curtis’ warm sepia-toned images are masterpieces of photography and have become synonyms for stereotypes. They have shaped our idea of Native Americans and First Nations as much as Karl Bodmer’s paintings and Karl May’s novels. As famous as Curtis’ pictures may be, the story behind his iconic work «The North American Indian» is little known. It is one of superlatives and extremes, of high praises and harsh criticism, and one of astonishing perseverance. The exhibition sheds light on various aspects of this monumental œuvre, which is often attributed to a single man and his great vision. In fact, it tells the story of countless indigenous and non-indigenous participants and not least that of the beholders.
The 20 original photogravures on display testify to the outstanding quality of Curtis’s photographic work. All original pieces, 80 photogravures and 2 Volumes, are on loan from Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, Germany. Due to conservation regulations, they will be exchanged four times during the exhibition. »
